The first thing you need to know in order to learn to play the violin is how to hold it. It’s important to hold the violin properly. Therefore you need the right size as there are many different violin sizes. The right size depends on your arm length and hand size. You have to place the violin on your left shoulder (if you are right handed), and your chin on the chin rest on your violin (most violins have a chin rest). The neck of the violin must rest between the thumb and first finger. Try to hold the bow lightly with thumb and fingers. The fore finger should be on top of the pad.
As there are no frets on the violin, beginners can use finger taps that you have to place on the fingerboard instead. Another well-known technique uses dots of white-out on the fingerboard. The first position – this is the way the placement of your left hand on the fingerboard is called – is the most commonly used position for beginners. The lowest note in this position is an open G; the highest one in first position is played with the fourth finger on the E-string, sounding a B. If you move your first finger on the place of the second finger you reach the second position and if it takes the place of the third finger, you have the third position.
