Would the same action Stevie Ray had?
We all want the same action Stevie Ray Vaughan had. I mean guitar action, string height relief of neck, box level. I mean the way the action on his guitar is set up. Why would someone want a guitar like Stevie Rays configuration? Well for one thing, it is one of the best blues guitarists who ever lived. A relatively close second to Jimi Hendrix.
Lenny was one of the guitar Stevie ray favorite. Because I do the setup work and understand the characteristics Stevie Ray used for this particular guitar, I wanted to share the specifications with you. I reviewed a Lenny guitar, and boy oh boy it is nice installation. In short, I do the installation work, it is very precise and mechanical and I love the introduction to the guitars and then hear them say that it has never played like that before. I'm not a guitar maker though, I'm an installation artist.
Stevie Rays Lenny Setup Sheet:
Scale 25-1/2 "with a compound 7-1/4" radius up to 12 ".
Frets are huge, new 0110 x 0055.
Strings are GHS Nickel Rockers, super large gauge .013 "in 0058. Must have been the strength of a giant super human in his hands!
action Nut. o20 on low E at nut and 3.5/32 "at 17th fret. On the high E the action .012" at nut and 5 / 64 "at 17th fret.
In other words, what are the most critical points of adjustment. Not only, but to combine the different settings in the correct order and you put a guitar like Stevie Ray. Realistically, if you have the specifications that it can be configured your way or your favorite guitarists sheet.
Personally, I like even less action, string height or on the frets. For as little as I can get without friction. I came with my own reading strategy to try and setup adjustments from many players such as Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson, to name a few. I also develop a bone nut as a replacement nut for all my guitars. It adds great tone for cheap.
However said, I do not recommend making your own installation work. It is a job for a true craftsman. Especially if you've never installed or do not have the proper tools. I would suggest trying it on a cheap guitar the first time. If not, a perfect find a competent luthier setup and give the specifications of configuration you want.
Fortunately, this article provides some depth the fact that the setup is not all guitarists of their guitars in the same way. Each person and each style has a configuration that works Good for them, even if you do not know yet. Go practice the guitar now and see how much you really like is the setup. Enjoy
