Rapport Building: So What Do I Say?
So… didn’t I promise that I’d tell you what to say to score any woman you want? Well I’d love to share with you (and the rest of the male population) my secret pickup line that can make any woman love you instantly but there’s only one problem: there is no such magic line. Learning effective communication with women is no easy task, but I’ll start by dropping the most basic and profound truth about the skill.
It’s not what you say but rather how you say it.
What most guys try to do and why it fails
Most of the male population tries to attract a woman by doing one of two fatal mistakes. Some guys tell her how amazing she is in a misguided attempt to flatter their way into her heart and subsequently her pants. Other guys brag for hours on end about all the qualities they think are attractive with the false understanding that their rants will make her agree on how awesome the self-absorbed Romeo is. Both of these will backfire on you for different reasons.
Giving a woman an honest, sincere compliment about her on occasion is one thing, but many guys take it way too far. Yes she knows that she has a great body, of course she knows her clothes are perfect and do you really think that you’re the only guy who’s noticed how sexy her hair is? Any remotely attractive woman hears these things all day long. By repeating the same exact things every other guy has told her you’re not going to make yourself stand out of the pack are you? Or worse yet, what if you end up boring her by copying the same old compliments every other man that’s hit on her that day has told her? If you are going to give a woman a compliment make sure it’s something that has honestly impressed you about her that separates her from all other women. And most importantly don’t compliment her too much or your comments will lose their meaning.
Now to those guys who just can’t seem to quit talking about how amazing they are… while the things you brag about might show girls that you’re an attractive guy the way you go about showing them off turns off women faster than it turns them on. It might be true that you’re an athletic superstar or a musical genius but if you’re really the strongest or fastest guy around then what need would you have to brag about it? People brag not to convince others of their skills but rather to convince themselves. If you are the best then you have no need to tell people so over and over do you?
On the other hand you can always blow a great date out of the water by letting your girl notice the guitar sitting in your room and ask you about it before shredding a solo that’d make Clapton jealous. By doing this rather than spending all night telling her how great of a musician you are she’ll be surprised when she hears your skills and can wonder what other talents you have hidden away. Women love a mysterious guy, remember?
What you should do instead
There are two things you want a girl to take away from a conversation with you; you want her to think that you’re both interesting and attractive.
An interesting conversation equals an interesting person
This might sound like it should be a bit obvious but it still needs to be stated; interesting people are interesting because they hold interesting conversations. So all you have to do in order to become an interesting person is to learn how to hold interesting conversations. That’s the tricky part for most people, but all you need to realize in order to learn how to hold conversations that fascinates your company is that what makes a conversation interesting to a woman are topics that she finds interesting. Most guys assume that conversations on topics they find interesting will also interest all the women they come across. WRONG!
While I’m not saying that you shouldn’t talk about the things that you find passionate, but when you’re trying to build some sort of banter and interest with a girl you’ve just met then you might be better suited trying to find topics that interest you both wouldn’t you?
How you figure out what interests a girl is quite simple actually. Everyone has a few select topics that they want to talk about in any conversation, and all you need to do is listen to figure out what they are. If you actually pay attention to what she’s saying instead of thinking about what you’re going to say next then she’ll slip little hints for you to pick up on. She’ll add little references to topics that she finds interesting in her statements about other subjects, and if you can catch these little gems when she talks then you’ll know exactly where to guide the conversation so that she’s interested. You just listen to what she says and pick out the couple of words that tell you what she wants to tell you about.
The name for this technique is called cherry picking
And it doesn’t just apply to seduction. I use cherry picking in conversations with everybody from friends to work associates to knowledgeable people on every subject imaginable, and you have no idea how many interesting conversations you can have and just how much you can learn from people until you try it. I’ll give you a couple examples of cherry picking in action: The highlighted words are the cherries and below each example I’ve included some good follow up questions so you can see exactly how cherry picking can be utilized.
“I love this song the DJ is playing right now. These guys are so good live.”
“Oh so you’ve been to one of their concerts before? What are they like?”
“That’s an interesting necklace; where’d you get it?”
“I bought it from a small shop when I visited Israel.”
“You’ve been to Israel then? What was the trip like?”
“I got off work at the labs just a couple of minutes ago.”
“You work in a lab? What sort of work do you do then?”
Leave her attracted to you
While having an interesting conversation is crucial, it’s only half the battle; what good does it do if she finds you amazingly interesting but doesn’t find you attractive? Luckily for you though being interesting will help you out immensely with making yourself attractive. Your next goal is showing her that you’re independent, well-liked and an overall high quality guy to be with.
Women find men who’re leaders of both themselves and others attractive, as well as guys who’re in high demand. By leaders of themselves I mean guys who do what they want to do and don’t take orders from anybody unless they choose to go along with what they’re told to do. For example how many times does James Bond let himself be bossed around by the criminals? Or for that matter even his boss? He follows through his missions and doesn’t care who stands in his way because he is too much of a leader of himself to let his life be controlled by anyone. He is independent. He is immensely attractive to women. Could there possibly be a correlation?
Don’t let her boss you around or tell you what to do. Ever.
Guys who’re in demand have a similar appeal. People naturally want things that are rare or hard to get in order to show off their status. As proof of this phenomena consider the popularity of cars like Hummers, Ferraris and Corvettes; the vast majority of their owners will never use them for performance but rather use to show off how much money they can spend. It’s not the vehicle itself that’s important (not to say that these cars aren’t amazing) but rather the status that comes along with it. So if a woman thinks that having you as a boyfriend will make her more popular or cool then she’ll naturally be attracted to you.
Let her see how popular you are. If you’re well-connected then she’ll become popular by association, and everyone likes to be liked. That means that you should never hesitate to bring people into conversations, especially when you’re talking to an attractive woman. Show her that being with you will open up new social circles for her too by starting conversations with everyone (no matter whether or not you know them yet).
Just have fun
A third way to attract her is to let her see that you’re a fun guy to be around. More than just being independent and sociable you need to let her know that you’re having a good time. Some ways to do that are by teasing her every once in a while with a playful attitude. That means that you don’t flat out put her down, but also that you’re teasing her for your amusement, not hers. This technique is called cocky/funny, and is outlined very extensively in the Paragon Project’s Crash Course.
Beyond the words
Relax. Have fun. That’s the entire point of meeting women isn’t it; to have fun? Let that show in the way you position yourself; keep your body in a relaxed, open position. That means that your arms aren’t crossed, you lean back rather than forward and you take your time to do things. Having your body in an open position shows that you are both comfortable with your settings as well as confident (ie you don’t feel a need to physically protect yourself). This shows that you are confident in the situation and are an alpha male.
Also think about where you’re looking when you talk to people; looking down implies that you consider yourself to be inferior, while looking away shows disinterest. Since neither are particularly good, always look at the person you’re talking to straight in the eyes. That shows confidence and maturity. When you’re listening however it is acceptable to look away, so long as it’s not gazing at your feet. By looking away when talked to but looking at your subjects eyes while speaking you convey that you are in control of the conversation.
