Attn: guitar nerds – can you help with double locking trem?
I have an Ibanez RG 1570 Prestige series w/ a double locking trem. Every time I break a string I have to get it set up because it’s impossible to tune it w/out messing up the rest of the strings. All of my strings besides my high E string stay within the bounds of the fine tuners at the bridge, but my high E always goes out of range of the fine tuners first, i.e. the tightest position on my high E fine tuner still makes a flat tone. How can I tune it like the techs do at Guitar Center (while keeping every string in tune) so that I don’t have to keep paying for a setup?
You gotta learn this and live by it. It took me years and alot of time. After you learn this, you should be able to mentally see how this actually works and it’s tricky. Floyd Rose was amazing to have thought of this contraption. anyways-
Here’s the secret and I wish more people could read this and learn-
1- after you restring, don’t tighten the strings. Have the tremolo assembly resting against the body of the guitar. use a sock between the tremolo and the body to prevent damage.
2- use the ends of one of your cables to slide in between the body and the tremolo. adjust the cables so that the bridge rests even and parallel with the body. This is the point of return. Once you start tuning to your likings, make sure the bridge doesn’t move. This step should “recreate” a fixed bridge setup.
3- Remove cables and watch it go all out of tune. This is okay because now it’s time to adjust the springs connected to the bridge and the spring plate, which is connected to the guitar body within the cavity by usually 2 screws.
4- adjust the springs so the bridge gets as close to the point of return as possible. This will take alot of time and adjusting.
5- tighten or loosen the screws to fine tune the bridges point of return. You will have to come back to this step after you break your strings in, possibly step 4 again but rare.
It’s been a while since I’ve done this process but I believe thats correct. Either way, if you’re smart enough to learn guitar, you should be able to figure it out if i missed a step. If you need more help go to carvin.com and check there for more tips. They are gods! Good luck! tjregalia@yahoo.com
